By surrendering his Gnosis to the ruler of Snezhnaya as part of a deal and stepping back into obscurity, he allowed the Liyue Qixing to assume full authority. The successful subduing of the ancient sea monster Osial by the combined forces of the adepti, Qixing, and security forces proved that Liyue no longer required a god's direct rule. Consequently, Zhongli remained in Liyue as an employee of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, observing his people with a quiet satisfaction while navigating mortal life without personal funds.

In Their Own Story

When the Traveler arrived in Liyue to meet the Geo Archon, they witnessed what appeared to be Morax's death and were immediately suspected of the crime. Tartaglia saved the Traveler from arrest and directed them to Zhongli for help. Zhongli agreed to assist in organizing the funeral ceremony for Morax while guiding the Traveler through the investigation. During this time, the Traveler cleared their name but uncovered Tartaglia's manipulation behind the scenes. Confronting Tartaglia in the Golden House revealed that the Archon's remains lacked a Gnosis, leading Tartaglia to summon Osial to force Morax out. After Osial was subdued and Morax did not reappear, Zhongli revealed his true identity to the Traveler. He explained that he had faked his death to relinquish rule and transfer authority to the people of Liyue, having already surrendered his Gnosis in a deal with Snezhnaya.
