Dvalin
The wind dragon who once guarded Mondstadt before corruption turned him into a storm.
Dvalin, also known as Stormterror in his corrupted state, is a mighty wind dragon shaped by Barbatos, the Anemo Archon, from a wisp of wind to protect Mondstadt. Unlike the ancient Dragon Sovereigns—primordial elemental dragons who predate the Seven Archons—Dvalin is a divine shaping, not a Sovereign. He was a loyal guardian of the skies and a close companion to Barbatos, but after a fateful battle with the dark dragon Durin in the skies above Mondstadt, he was wounded by Durin's poisonous blood. Durin's corpse fell onto Dragonspine, but the fight itself occurred high above. Retreating to the ruins of Decarabian's tower (now Stormterror's Lair), the corruption festered, twisting his mind and body into the monstrous Stormterror.

Lore & Background
The tragedy began when Dvalin fought the dark dragon Durin in the skies above Mondstadt. During the battle, Durin's poisonous blood seeped into his wounds, corrupting him from within. He retreated to his lair in the ruins of Decarabian's tower, where the corruption festered over time. This twisted his mind and body, turning him into Stormterror, a beast that unleashed violent storms upon Mondstadt. The dragon lost his memories and his sense of self, becoming nothing more than a force of destruction driven by pain and confusion. It was only through the intervention of the Traveler and the guidance of Barbatos that Dvalin could be cleansed of the dark influence.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled across Starfell Lake, carrying with it the scent of ozone and decay. High above, a shadow eclipsed the sun—massive wings beating against the storm clouds. The Traveler looked up, not with fear, but with sorrow, seeing the twisted scales that once shone like polished jade now blackened by filth. Dvalin roared, a sound that was less a challenge and more a cry of agony. As the purification began, the dark sludge hissed and evaporated, revealing the golden eyes of the old friend beneath. The storm broke, replaced by a gentle breeze that whispered apologies to the city below.
Reader's Guide
Dvalin serves as a central figure in Mondstadt's history, representing both the glory of its founding and the fragility of peace. Originally known as Dvalin, he was one of the four Dragon Sovereigns who pledged allegiance to the Seven Archons after the cataclysm that reshaped Teyvat. His role shifted dramatically when corruption from the ruins of Orobashi in Dragonspine infected him during his slumber. This event turned a protector into a monster, forcing the people of Mondstadt to flee their homes as Stormterror unleashed chaos upon the region. The resolution of this conflict highlights themes of redemption and friendship. With the help of the Traveler, Dvalin was purified, regaining his memories and his place beside Barbatos. His story serves as a reminder that even those who fall can be restored through courage and compassion.
